In our last blog, your friends at Midge & co told you all about things to do in Houghton Lake this week we are heading a bit north to talk about Higgins Lake area! Relax and unwind as we tell you all about the area. Feel free to daydream about making memories in your new cottage up north, we won’t mind!

Located just 5 miles west of Roscommon you will find Higgins Lake, noted one of the world’s most beautiful lakes. The lake’s clear, blue water and the spectacular depth have made this area a popular vacation destination, providing excellent beach facilities, camping, boat launch sites, hiking trails and cross county skiing.

You will find two state parks, North Higgins Lake State Park & South Higgins Lake State Park, named for their locations on opposite ends of the late. Both state parks offer public boat launches, camping and beach areas. South Higgins Lake State Park is larger and more developed. The North Higgins Lake State park is smaller but is located on land that was once the world’s largest seedling nursery.

This 10,185 acres lake is known for being deep and its water being crystal clear. Higgins Lake is one of the deepest inland lakes in the United States, other than the great lakes, and provides for good fishing through the lake especially at weedy drop off points around the island. You can expect to catch lake trout, bass, pike, perch, small mouth bass, rainbow trout and more.

Higgins lake is popular for boating and swimming but it offers many opportunities for adventure on land year round. The Cross Country Ski Headquarters is a premier destination for cross country skiing in Michigan featuring 19 kilometers of pristine groomed ski trails. During the warmer months of spring and summer you can enjoy the ski trails for hiking, biking, and dog walking.

If you want to go fast and kick up some dust then head over to the West Higgins Lake ORV Trail head. There you can connect to ORV routes and trails that run north into Crawford County and west into Missaukee County. Roscommon County is ORV friendly and allows the use of ATVs & UTVs on the far right of county roads. In the winter these trails offer some of the finest snowmobiling and connect to the well known 81 mile Kalkaska Route. Higgins lake is within quick driving distance to Houghton Lake & Roscommon for access to grocery stores and dining & other shopping but you will find plenty within Higgins lake as well. If you are out and about be sure to stop into the Loom Room on West Higgins Lake Dr, your one-stop-shop for Higgins Lake apparel and souvenirs, homemade fudge, gifts, decor, and more since the 1950’s! If you are craving a sweet treat you can visit the Cottage Inn or Nibbles Ice Cream.

The Landmark restaurant, on Hillcrest rd, is well known for its outstanding food and friendly service in a quiet comfortable setting. You may also enjoy Streamside Restaurant on the cut river. They offer a complete dining experience and a full bar with live music and entertainment on the weekends. Just a short drive into Roscommon you will find the famous Fred’s of Roscommon.
